The Underdog Game FAQ
History:
This incarnation of the UDG was created in 2004 by Nashville resident Thom O'Rourke. UDG rewards its players for selecting underdogs who have a chance to win their games outright. However, UDG also rewards its players for getting close by covering the spread.
What is up with the website?
Elliott Roberts, founder of Netquirk, created the site for the 2008 UDG in order to make it easier for folks to make their picks. Players should be able to easily navigate this user friendly site to make their picks and check the season's progress. OK, Thom helped a little too.
(Developer's note: The site could be prettier, and I know it. Hopefully, it works, and we'll be working on the look in the early weeks of this season. For a better look at what Netquirk is capable of, visit www.netquirk.com).
How do I play?
Each player selects one Division One college football team each week. The team must be an underdog in that week's game. In other words the team can't be favored.
How is the game scored?
If the underdog selected wins their game out right, the player receives 1 and 1/2 times the spread of that week's game. For example, if a player selected Alabama as an 8 point underdog to LSU, and Alabama wins the game, that player would receive 12 points.
What if my team loses but covers the spread?
In that case, the player would receive the difference between the spread and the amount the team loses by. For example, if a player selects Alabama as a 7 point underdog to Tennessee and Alabama loses by four, the player would receive three points.
What if my team loses by the spread or more?
After drying their tears for making a bad pick, the player would simply receive no points for that week. There is no penalty.
When do I make my pick?
Post time for morning games(before noon) is 10 a.m. The time for afternoon games (between 12 noon and 6) is 12 noon. Post time for evening games (later than 6) is 6:00 pm. All times are Central.
What spread do we use?
The approved spread is at Sportsbook.com.
How do points accumulate, and how do I win?
Each player builds a point total out of the number of points earned each week. The player with the most points at the end of the season wins.
When does the game end?
Players select one team each week up through the weekend of the conference championship games. Bowl games are left for real gambling.
Can I invite friends to play?
Absolutley. The first week this year begins Thursday August 30. In order to play a full season this year, players would need to select a game for that week. HOWEVER, if a new player wants to join mid-season, that’s fine too. They will simply have fewer chances to earn points.
Where do I send my email correspondence if I have questions?
